Set Design

Jan Lavacek - Scene Designer
Jan is a freelance designer and visual artist based in Galena. Jan was a co-founder of Main Street Players Theatre Company in Galena in 1986 and served as its resident scenic and lighting director through 1995. During two seasons at Timberlake Playhouse in Mt. Carroll, IL, he filled various positions including technical director and lighting director. He has designed shows for the University of Wisconsin‹Platteville and the University of Dubuque, as well as premier productions of Sketches>From a Drawing Room, Mothering Heights, and Uncle Jake's 90th. Recent design projects include Tintypes and You Never Know for Light Opera Works in Evanston, IL.

Jan first designed a scale model of the set before beginning the actual construction phase of the scene design. He explains that it benefits those working on set construction by giving them an idea of what the finished set will look like as well as helping the actors picture how their blocking (movements around the stage) will work with the set.

Jan works to get the set ready for the opening of the show during the afternoons.
