The Grand Opera House Announces Auditions for

The Grand Opera House will present Rock of Ages, a musical featuring the greatest hits of the 80s from Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister and others.   The musical’s book is by Chris D’Areinzo with arrangements and orchestrations by Ethan Popp.

and February 23 & March 1, 2020 @ 2:00PM

Where do I go to audition? 

Auditions will be held at the Grand’s Rehearsal space in the Arcade Building, 880 Locust St., Suites 222 and 228.  Please enter though the alley entrance located between Locust and Main.  When you enter go up just past the first hallway and take the stairs on the left to the second floor.  The rooms are right at the top of the stairs. 

 

Do I need to prepare anything? Or Bring anything? 

Actors should prepare a 32 bar or 1 min cut of a song in the style of the show (Classic Rock).  Please bring sheet music in the correct key, an accompanist will be provided.  Actors will read from a selection of short sides provided on the day of auditions. 

 

Oh God, Are you going to make me dance? 

All actors should be prepared to learn a basic movement combination at the initial audition.

 

What If I can't get to auditions right at the start?

Actors wishing to audition but are unavailable to arrive at the start of the audition time should call the Grand Opera House business office at 563-588-4356 or email director@thegrandoperahouse.com to give an approximate arrival time.

 

What if I can't attend auditions at all, but I still really want to try out?

Actors unable to attend auditions may make alternate arrangements or submit an audition video to director@thegrandoperahouse.comVideo submissions should contain 2 contrasting 32 bars of vocal selection showcasing range. Video submissions must be received prior to the first audition date.

 
When are rehearsals? 
Full Company rehearsals will begin in early January
 
What If I have days I can't be at rehearsal? 
Those auditioning should be prepared to list all conflict or potential conflicts between January 6th and February 16th. Availability for dress/technical rehearsals February 17-20, 2020 and all performances is mandatory. Rehearsals will typically run weeknights with some weekend days.
 

 

 

Seeking Actors, Singers and Dancers to Play:

 

DREW  An appealing, good-guy rocker with great, easy comedic timing, a boyish charm, vulnerability and a very strong rock tenor voice. Drew works at the legendary Bourbon Room hoping and waiting for his dreams to come true. He finds an instant attraction to Sherrie, the beautiful new arrival from the Midwest, who encourages him to go after his dreams. (Vocal Range: Bb3-D5)

 

SHERRIE  An in-shape, pretty, fresh faced, innocent Midwestern girl stepping right off the bus into a new world to pursue her dreams of stardom. Strong comedic timing, strong rock belt, good movement ability. Should be comfortable in revealing/skimpy clothing. (Vocal Range: G3-F5)

 

LONNY  The narrator of the piece, charming, mischievous, welcoming, vibrant personality, a guy who would be fun to spend one drunken night with. Strong, honest comedic timing/improv skills and strong rock vocals. (Vocal Range: D3-D5)

 

DENNIS DUPREE  Classic stoner type guy who runs the famous Bourbon Room club. Torn about whether he should sell the club to Hertz, a German businessman. Very strong comedic timing. A laid back, easy going dude real dude. Bari-tenor rock vocals. (Vocal Range: D3-G4)

 

STACEE JAXX  A sexy rock star. Decided to leave his successful hair/metal-rock band to try it solo. Self-important, confident intriguing in all the wrong ways, the ultimate bad boy; he is all about sex, drugs and rock-n-roll. Great strong comedic timing and strong rock tenor voice. (Vocal Range: C3-Eb5)

 

JUSTICE  Female, strong presence, an easy sensuality about her, once a performer, she now operates a strip club where Sherrie winds up working. Takes on the maternal role for the girls that work for her. Strong, soulful vocals and belt needed. (Vocal Range: G3-Db5)

 

HERTZ KLINEMANN  An attractive older German male. Uptight, cold, intimidating businessman trying to buy up the Strip to develop it. The bad guy of the piece. Strong comedic timing and baritone vocals. German accent (Vocal Range: F3-G#4)

 

FRANZ KLINEMANN  Hertz's son, young German male. Works for his father but not by choice. Pressured and intimidated by his father. Shy, gentle with a big heart. Over the course of the show, changes and hilariously stands up to his father. Strong vocals and comedic timing.  German accent (Vocal Range: Db3-E5)

 

REGINA  A fun, hippie type, in shape, earthy girl who fights against the attempted takeover of The Strip. Strong comedic timing, belt vocals. - A crunchy granola type hilarious tree-hugging fighter who will stop at nothing to protect The Strip.  (Vocal Range: A3-Eb5)

 

FATHER  Sherrie’s conservative father, who objects to Sherrie’s move to LA. Will also appear as a member of the ensemble. Strong vocals.

 

MOTHER  Sherrie’s conservative mother, who objects to Sherrie’s move to LA. but still remains in contact .Will also appear as a member of the ensemble.  Strong vocals.

 

MAYOR  A strong character actor with good comedic timing, strong rock tenor and strong dance/movement ability. (Vocal Range: D3-84)

 

WAITRESS #1  Featured singer- works with Sherrie-hilariously referred to as “Waitress #1” in show. Strong vocals, will also be member of Ensemble

 

JA'KEITH  A strong character actor with good comedic timing, strong rock tenor and strong dance/movement ability. (Vocal Range: D3-84)

 

JOEY PRIMO  A young male with the rocker sensibility, strong rock tenor and strong /dance/movement ability.

 

CONSTANCE  Reporter assigned to interview Stacee Jaxx. Will also appear as a member of the ensemble. Comedic timing.

 

CANDI  Male cross dressing dancer or female with low voice with strong stage presence


SLEAZY PRODUCER (Male or Female)  Sleazy movie producer who is a customer at the Venus Club. Strong stage presence

VENUS CLUB DANCERS:  The sexiest female singer/dancers around. Sassy, in shape, beautiful. Must be comfortable in very skimpy/sexy clothing. Strong dancers proficient in jazz and modern, comedic ability and strong rock vocals. Also part of ensemble. Featured dancers are Destiny and Sapphire. 

 

ENSEMBLE:  (Male/Female)
Sassy with comedic ability. Should have strong vocals and ability to move well. The Ensemble will play a variety of roles including:  ROCKERS, DANCERS, BOURBON ROOM PATRONS, WAITRESSES, WAITERS, BARTENDERS, CHURCH CHOIR, GROUPIES, BACK UP SINGERS, RIOT POLICE, HOMELESS, PROTESTERS, ROCK VIDEO MTV DANCERS, ETC.
